I was associated and also headed many Activity Clubs in my senior School and have been actively contributing my time and effort towards community services over the years.
My primary objective is to sensitize the community towards waste management and offer innovative solutions for conversion of waste to value and to empower the citizens to continuously engage in their attempts to reduce waste in cities & rural areas while simultaneously working towards judicious use of resources.
In my neighborhood, in association with our esteemed local Resident Welfare Association (RWA) I am leading and successfully running my ‘Green Battery Initiative‘ which spreads awareness regarding the ill effects of improper disposal of the used / old batteries (and other e-waste material) through social media messages, posters, fliers, personal interactions etc. and promotes their safe disposal for which a dedicated collection box has been placed by the RWA for use by the residents and clearance by the approved recycling agency. I may add here that around 1,000 households in the neighborhood have been actively contributing to this very unique green initiative of mine.
I am extremely proud to share that my very unique ‘Green Battery Initiative’ project for safe disposal and recycling of the used & old batteries was selected amongst multiple entries on pan India basis at the National Level (under Category – A for School Students) for the ‘Swachhta Saarthi Fellowship Cohort 2022’ program under ‘Waste to Wealth Mission’ by the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India under the Prime Ministers’ nine Scientific Missions (https://www.wastetowealth.gov.in/fellowship-listing/swachhta-saarthi-fellowship-cohort-2022). I may also highlight here that mine was the first entry to have been selected from our School, ever since the fellowship award was announced by the Government, and would also like to express my sincere gratitude to our Green Brigade Teacher In-charge for all her support and guidance in my getting this recognition which is actually a small beginning towards larger sustainability objective.
My another green initiative – ‘Re-Med Initiative‘ for educating our neighborhood residents not to discard the used / empty medicine strips & blister packs in garbage being very harmful since they are primarily made up of aluminum and plastic, but to collect and recycle them through an approved recycling agency, is also running very successfully in association with our esteemed local Resident Welfare Association (RWA). And a dedicated collection box for their safe disposal has been placed by the RWA for use by the residents and is periodically cleared by the approved recycling agency. And around 1,000 households in the neighborhood have been actively contributing to this very unique green initiative of mine.
I was formally initiated into community service by our Grade 9 class teacher when she prompted us to plant a tree as a part of the school English project – inspired I planted a Neem Tree in our local community playground. It was a real learning experience for me and I feel very proud & fulfilled as I am seeing the tree grow-up every day. As part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, I planted another Jamun fruit tree in the community playground and I have been carrying out many more tree plantation drives with collective effort of the residents.
I also taught around 50+ underprivileged slum children at the ‘Khwahishein Foundation‘ Gurgaon (an NGO) for around four months spread over a period of two years (during my Grade 9 and Grade 11). It was a real humbling and wonderful learning experience for me and I really benefited a lot by interacting and teaching the underprivileged but extremely hardworking & talented youngsters eager to learn.
I also ‘volunteered as a Scribe‘ by writing multiple CBSE Board Exam Papers for the differently abled 10th and 12th Graders in my School.
I singlehandedly ‘hosted a Chess Tournament’ (first of its kind in our neighborhood) in our local Community Centre to promote, guide and encourage young children to pursue chess as a sport and to give an opportunity to the Senior citizens and seasoned players to come out and play the game they have always loved. I was so overwhelmed by the response, that now I am successfully running a Chess Club in the Colony with active support and association of our esteemed RWA.
I am also working on the initiative to sensitize, motivate & prompt our neighborhood residents to recycle their old & used clothes, books, stationary items, toys etc. by depositing them at predesignated collection boxes at our Resident Welfare Association (RWA) Office so that these items can then be distributed amongst the underprivileged & needy children / persons etc. [and also through the Charitable Organizations supporting the cause].
Also, to commemorate and celebrate 75 Years of our great Nation’s Independence day – ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, I along-with other members of the Green Brigade Club of our School had planted many fruit tree saplings in our School campus.
I have also been donating all the proceeds I get from selling my photographs showcased here, to the Charitable Organizations supporting the underprivileged.
I being part of the Interact Club of our School, tried doing our bit for the children and families affected by the devastating earthquakes in Syria and Turkey, by mobilizing a rice collection drive in school in February 2023 end. Total of 500 kg of rice was collected which was sent to Syria by air cargo services of the Embassy of Syria on 5th of March 2023.
I believe that this is just the beginning of my baby steps towards building a greener and more inclusive Society, since ‘small drops, do make an ocean’, and ‘One Man Can Make a Change‘.
Kindly feel free to reach out to me for any feedback or any guidance in the mater and I shall be more than happy to partner or assist with you in your responsibility endeavors / initiatives.
